“I am South Dakota” BCYMP Youth Poetry Reading (with support from the SD Humanities

Adding their voices to the literary landscape of South Dakota, students, 13-18, will share poems that express their sense of community, identity and connection to others. The poems shared were inspired by the anthology, South Dakota in Poetry, and shaped during workshops at BHS and MMS with Patrick Hicks, Erika Saunders and Darla Biel.
Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program (BCYMP) is an established youth mentoring program that recruits, trains and matches adult volunteers with K-12 grade students in Brookings County for the purpose of increasing their resiliency through supportive relationships. One way to build resilience and supportive opportunities for young people is to equip them with an understanding of reading and writing as a way of exploring a sense of identity and of finding their unique perspective and voice.
This program is supported through a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Readers and audience members will be able to attend in-person or virtually.
